For more than a century, the South Jutlandic folk sport of ring riding has been strong here in Broager.
The board of Broager Ringriderforening wanted to mark this by donating a sculpture to the city of Broager that would symbolize the ring riding festival and the sport of ring riding. Together with Broager Kunstfond, they decided to contact the artist Marco Evaristti.
Evaristti agreed and drew up a proposal that was approved by the Ringrider Association and the Art Foundation.
The finished sculpture saw the light of day and was inaugurated at the 100th anniversary of the Ringrider Festival on July 3, 2003.
The viewer of the Ringrider sculpture sees a woman wrapped in a robe-like cloth. She holds a lance, the tip of which can be seen above with a spiked ring.
In the base there is a four-part light source shining up towards the woman. The light source consists of four horseshoes that belonged to the legendary chairman's horse Socco. In his lifetime, Socco had led the ringrider procession 64 times.
The whole thing cost DKK 400,000, which came from Broager Municipality's Art Fund, Broager Ringriderforening, various foundations, companies and private individuals.
Shortly after the inauguration, the sculpture was removed from its place. It had been stolen.
The police found neither the sculpture nor the perpetrators. The Ringrider Association and the Art Foundation, in collaboration with Evaristti, agreed to have a copy made. It was again an expense of DKK 125,000 that had to be raised.
In 2015, the original appeared in the castle lake at Sandbjerg Castle. What's next?
In agreement with Evaristti, it was decided to place both sculptures in the portal in their current location.
In 2019, the double sculpture could be rededicated.
